Just downloaded the MacOS version and it won’t open because Apple can’t check it for malicious software. Then it says it must be updated by the developer.

Can you try this procedure?
As of now, version 0.9.0 is a pre-release and is not fully signed, triggering macOS’s security for 3rd Party Applications. You can bypass this warning by going to:
System Preferences
Security & Privacy
Click the lock icon on the bottom left hand corner
Enter your password
Click ‘Open Anyway’
